Welcome to Swanage Army Link.

The Swanage Army Link is a dynamic association that has evolved over nearly 30 years between the Swanage Railway, the British Army, the People of Swanage and the Royal British Legion.

Regular ongoing visits by the Royal Corps of Signals soldiers are core to this Link, as is Team Herston, formed in 2007, bringing together local residents and ex soldiers who work regularly on our core project – the upkeep of Herston Halt.

More recently we have been proud to welcome Heroes Haven into the fold.

Heroes Haven update 23rd June 2011

Heroes Haven Update.

Frank has asked me to give you all an update on the ‘Cabin’....

In the beginning we (Trustees) were all naïve to believe that we could raise the money and purchase the cabin and plonk it on a piece of ground at a local holiday park! Not the case, as we were to find out quite quickly, the fund raising has been amazing, the support from everyone has astonished us and the money has come in. The hard part was to get the planning application prepared and submitted, for various reasons, new build, green belt, area of outstanding beauty etc, etc, it meant that so much more had to be done before we could get to the stage of submitting the plans. Visual Impact reports, Trees, Highways, and the list goes on, therefore our hopes of getting the plans in for January 2011 was disappointingly shelved and it was May 2011 before we could submit. This of course means that the cabin will not be in place for the end of July, the date we wanted for Jack Otter to be able to occupy and enjoy Carnival Week, this is a bitter blow to us but after speaking to Helen Otter she said, there is always next year!;
quite typical of Helen, with all that they have gone through. Jack has to undergo another amputation to try and stem the infections he is regularly suffering, let’s hope this will work and that young man can start to get his life together, we send him our very best wishes.

After being awarded some very good grants from Help for Heroes, £10,000 and the Talbot Village Trust, £30,000, we have raised in the region of £150,000, this has covered the cost of the cabin and hopefully the landscaping, but as we have already found out, there is always something that crops us that we didn’t allow for. Fundraising will always have to be done, once the cabin is up and running we have to make sure all our overheads are well and truly

We are now looking at late summer/early autumn for the cabin to arrive and we can start the job of landscaping, we have set the Official Opening for April 27th 2012 and we hope, apart from Jack and Helen Otter, to have a very important person to officiate, keep your fingers crossed please. As I missed the last Trustee’s meeting, I’m not sure what the arrangements will be for our ‘Open Days’, which initially was to be in July, they will still take place and we will let you know when, it will give you all an opportunity to come and see what you have all worked so hard for.

Thank you so much for supporting Frank in his mammoth undertaking, and to Frank, what can we say, You’re the Biggest Star amongst us, see you at the Square Friday night and in Swanage early Saturday morning (no hangover please!).

Linda Welsh
